We've learned what the Articles of Confederation were, now let's see them put to the test! We're going to look at two major events during the Confederation Era...it's up to you to decide whether each is a success or a failure.
INSTRUCTIONS: Open a word document and type your name in the top left corner. Splendid. From here, it's pretty simple: just type your answers in the word document, and print it out for credit. (Make sure you answer all parts of each question!)

I. SHAYS'S REBELLION
http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/539191/Daniel-Shays
1) Who was Daniel Shays? Write down some important parts of his biography. What was his heritage? In what important battles did he fight? In which state did he live? (You need to answer ALL those questions I just asked)
http://www.ushistory.org/us/15a.asp
2) In your own words, summarize what Shays's Rebellion was. Among other things, include the following:
-Where it occurred
-Who was its leader
-Why the protesters were upset
-How the government responded
http://www.earlyamerica.com/review/summer/letter.html -- This is tough reading, but give it a try. What I'm really getting at is that fourth paragraph, where Jefferson talks about rebellion being a good thing.
3) How did Jefferson respond to Shays' Rebellion? What are his ideas concerning rebellion in general? What does he mean by this?
4) Now that you've learned about Shays' Rebellion, do you think that it shows the success or the failure of the U.S. government under the Articles? Why?
II. NORTHWEST ORDINANCE OF 1787
http://www.ourdocuments.gov/doc.php?flash=old&doc=8
1) What land was this about, again? (you should remember this from class)
2) What were the three provisions, or parts, of this ordinance?
http://www.earlyamerica.com/earlyamerica/milestones/ordinance/
3) What was a result of the Northwest Ordinance?
4) Do you think that the Northwest Ordinance was a success or a failure of the government under the Articles? Why?
--> Look back over your document. Is it written in complete sentences? When you look at it later, will you be able to easily tell the definition of both Shays's Rebellion and the Northwest Ordinance? (You'll need to know these terms)
